What Are Bag Filters?

A bag filter is a type of air filtration device that uses fabric filter bags to remove particles from an air stream. They consist of long fabric bags or tubes supported inside a rigid frame. The bags themselves are made from various materials such as fiberglass, synthetic polymers, or blended cotton and synthetic fabrics.

How Does This Industrial Filter Work?

Contaminated air enters the bottom of the housing and is forced up through the perforated bags. As the air passes through the tiny pores in the bag fabric, particles embedded in the air become trapped on the exterior surface of the bags. This captures dust, smoke, mists, and other particulates while allowing cleaner air to pass through.

Multiple long, thin bags arranged neatly in parallel provide a large cumulative surface area for filtration within a relatively small volume. Various bag materials allow them to capture a wide range of particle sizes effectively.

Once particles accumulate on the bags, they need periodic cleaning to maintain efficiency. This is usually done by pulsing compressed air backward through the bags to dislodge any caked-on dust. Alternatively, some systems employ water washing or bag replacement.

Proper bag and housing design ensure even airflow distribution so that all surface area is fully utilized without bypassing or channeling. Regular cleaning keeps the fabric permeable and maintains low-pressure drops.

What Are Common Applications of Bag Filters?

Bag filters have a wide variety of applications due to their versatile design and ability to remove particles from large air volumes. They are commonly used in various industrial processes and facilities to control particulate emissions and protect equipment. There are several industrial applications for bag filters, including:

  • Power generation: Used at coal-fired power plants and biomass boilers to remove fly ash.

  • Cement manufacturing: Bag dust collectors capture powders during cement kiln operations.

  • Metals processing: Baghouses collect welding fumes, grinding dust, and other airborne particles from metalworking facilities.

  • Waste handling: Found at materials recovery plants, landfills, and waste incinerators to filter air exhaust and remove impurities from water.

  • Food industry: Remove flour dust, food additives, and other airborne contaminants from food production lines and facilities.

  • Automotive industry: Capture overspray particles and other dust generated from coating, sanding, and finishing processes in paint shops and body shops.

  • Chemical industry: Trap hazardous dust, mists, and gasses in areas where chemicals are transferred, stored, or disposed of to protect workers.
